Nancy Goslee Power and Associates

Three projects by this central figure of contemporary landscape design in Southern California
Nancy Goslee Power's name may not be as well known to the general public as say Frank Gehry, but then, the general public would most likely have trouble coming up with the name of any landscape designer *sigh*. But Nancy Goslee Power has collaborated with many "big names" including The Frank, Moore Ruble Yudell and Rem Koolhaas, and she is an important figure in contemporary landscape design. Her landscapes are modern, but not typically of the boldly sculptural type. They are architectural, but not rigidly geometric.

We recently visited three of her recent projects in Pasadena, California. She was chosen by Frank Gehry to work with him on the remodel of the Norton Simon Museum where she reworked the extensive gardens. At the new Art Center South Campus by Daly Genik she created a meadow-like roof garden. And just last week the first phase of the new Kidspace Museum designed by Michael Maltzan was opened featuring a range of outdoor exhibits, spaces and interactive gardens.

Also, an article in last week's LA Times covers the work at Kidspace and provides a detailed look at her life and career.

The Norton Simon main Garden's contemporary planting plan gives an overall effect of reminiscent of a Monet painting

Plants from around the world are brought together in rich layers, and unusual juxtopositions of succulents, tropicals, evergreens, bamboo and traditional perinials

Norton Simon Garden; Above left, Cycads (ancient palm-like gymnosperms), Nandina domestica and Angels Trumpet (Brugmansia) surround a sculptural water feature. Above right, swaths of succulents including Sedum nussbaumerianum and Aloe marginata are grouped with other srubs including Strelitzia reginae (bird of paradise) and Euphorbia characias.

Norton Simon Garden; Rush (juncus) and other reeds edge the pond, Kashmir Cypress and Deodar cedar trees are surrounded by a field of lavendar.

Norton Simon Garden; Giant Timber bamboo and a variety of dward bamboo are combined with Bird of Paradise, ginger and succulents. A towering grove of large Lemon-scented Gum Eucalyptus in the distance were existing on the property.

The just opened Kidspace Museum feautures a minimal paved central courtyard feauturing run-through water features, a large existing native oak tree (Quercus agrifolia) and a cluster of three sycamore trees.

Beyond the exhbition pavillion is the "Back 40" exhibit garden. The existing wisteria trellis adjacent to the pavillion was restored and now borders a paved courtyard with tricycle paths and a large transplanted oak tree.

Pathways crisscross the slope and weave through a vareity of themed gardens and interactive exhibits. A amphitheater occpies a grassy hollow at the center of the garden. While the plant pallette is wide ranging it features many native species.

I live on Zane Grey Terrace and admired a neighbor's landscaping and so then found out who had done the landscape and so came upon this website.
Thanks,

though a very talented designer, Nancy Goslee Power is NOT a landscape architect. she holds no license in any state or country.

Thanks, your correction has been noted, the implication that she was a landscape architect was unintentional.

Dear Nancy--
We were present in your studio for the speakers and booksigning for "California Native Plants for the Garden." Thankyou for sponsoring such inspiring events.
My husband and I are in the process of putting in a new driveway for his mother in Burbank. Would you have a short list of landscapists/environmentalists who do this sort of thing? A loose thought is to lay down bricks, pavers, or cement solely for the tires of vehicles, then to put some vegetation or composition between and to the sides. Something other than totally "paving paradise." Thank you for any suggestions. We are looking to achieve this project shortly.
